ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Albany Fire Department got an early Christmas present Thursday, $100,000 from Merck to build a new maintenance and storage facility.

Merck's Nancy Valaika presented the check to Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard and Fire Chief James Carswell Thursday morning.

When Merck left their Albany factor they promised to donate and move their fire department building to the Albany Training Facility.

Because of difficulties moving the building, Merck decided to donate money to build a new one instead.

"Merck has had a long standing reputation being in the area with the Albany Fire Company, and we wanted to assist them with their growth and development," said Nancy Valaika, Merck Global Facilities Management Director.

"So we are just glad that Merck and Company still looks at us and understands our needs, and are willing to give back.  We thank them so much for that," said Mayor Dorothy Hubbard, City Of Albany.

The Fire Department will build an 18-thousand square foot repair and storage building at their training facility.
