ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Dougherty County Sheriff's investigators are going through what they call a "large quantity of child pornography" they seized from a South Albany home Thursday.
The man arrested in the raid is charged with sexual exploitation of children.
Investigators don't think he made any of the porn but they say he did possess a lot of illegal material.
A federal law enforcement agency tipped off Dougherty County Sheriff's Investigators that 35-year-old Christopher Barton had downloaded child porn on his computer.
When Investigators raided his home, four children were living there.
Dougherty County Sheriff's Investigators raided this home off Newton Road about 5 in the morning on December 5th.They arrested 35-year-old Christopher Barton, who investigators say is a convicted felon from the San Francisco area.
"We seized electronic equipment, four firearms, marijuana less than an ounce, and a large quantity of pornographic material. That involved strictly child pornography," said Dougherty County Sheriff's Office Captain Craig Dodd.
Barton's fiancé, 36-year-old Ila Lewis was arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession. Her four children were also living in the home.
Sheriff's Investigators say Barton was only downloading the kiddie porn, but it's important to stop the people paying others to make it.
"So anybody who is in possession of child pornography who is buying it, selling it, or trading it, any of those people are criminals," Dodd.
And child pornography is not a victimless crime because of those kids used to make it.
"Many of these children are children who are probably the most vulnerable members of our society because in fact they have parents protecting them. Many of them are homeless kids or runaways," said Dr. Cheryl Kaiser of Insight Psychotherapy and Assessment Services.
Dougherty County Sheriff's Investigators did not want to name the federal agency they were working with, but it apparently found Barton through on line monitoring of child porn operations.
"There are a lot of sting operations because they realize that these particularly vulnerable children who are being targeted by people who make this type of pornography are not really being protected by anyone," said Dr. Kaiser.
Investigators say it's important to target people involved in child pornography, to make sure to protect children in their community from any potential threat.
Investigators say Ila Lewis was not aware of Barton's involvement with child pornography, so she was only charged with the marijuana possession.
They say because of the large amount of electronic equipment seized, the forensic investigation into all of it still continues.
Lewis was released on bond and retains custody of her children.
Barton is being held without bond in the Dougherty County jail.
