ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The former Dougherty County library board chairman insists his sudden resignation was not a result of a disagreement with the county commission.

Guy Craft, says he was thinking about resigning even before the board closed two library branches in June.  A decision county commissioners criticized.

Craft says he wanted to stay until renovations at the main library are finished but admits that the recent stress sped his decision up.

"It had begun to stress me. And I don't need the stress. With the death of our director, who was only 36, it devastated me. It also scared me," said Craft.

The former director, Ashley Moore died of a heart attack in September. On Monday commissioners grilled the interim director on ways to re-open the two branches.

83 year-old Craft was on the library board for nearly 4 years, three as chairman.  He's looking forward to resting and relaxing with his wife.   Craft wishes the best for the commission and board.

Here is the text of Craft's resignation letter:

To the Honorable Jeff Sinyard, County Commission Chairman:

This letter comes to you as my resignation from the Chairman of The Board of The Dougherty County Public Library System and the Board itself/

It is with the deepest regret that I submit this letter, and it has been my pleasure to serve this community on the Library Board.

I wish the best for the library and the community.

This resignation is effective immediately.

Sincerely,

Dr. Guy Craft
