DAWSON, GA (WALB) -

Right now the state isn't allowing south Georgia farmers to dig new wells into the Floridan aquifer. Farmers want to know if that will continue.

Dozens of farmers met with Environmental Protection Division officials in Terrell County Wednesday morning.

E-P-D Director Judd Turner decided to re-evaluate the state's current suspension of agriculture water permits each year. With many more farmers and more agriculture acreage, Georgia officials will annually assess the suspension's possible impact on the state's number one industry.

"EPD has decided to take an assessment of what's out there, ' said EPD Ag Water Permitting Unit's Cliff Lewis. "What's being used and how it's impacting resources and other factors so he can make a determination."

Currently there are 9 thousand permits issued for ag water use from the Floridan Aquifer in Southwest Georgia. The EPD director will make his next ruling on the permit suspension issue next November.
