THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

A telecommunications giant is working to help less fortunate Georgians continue their education.

AT&T recently donated $50,000 to the Technical College System of Georgia to use for GED testing scholarships.

The money will also help some GED students take the next step and complete a technical college education.

"In today's market when you have so many people without jobs, employers can be very selective, so an education can be part of that selection process. So if you don't have a high school diploma or a GED a lot of times you don't get the opportunity to interview, so it's very important to get your foot in the door," said SWGTC Adult Education Executive Director Dale Aldridge.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a person with a high school or GED diploma earns about $10,000 more a year than a person without those education credentials.
