ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
City leaders are hoping to decide very soon on how to distribute money generated from the Hotel-Motel tax.
Tuesday, Albany city commissioners went back and forth on where the extra revenue is needed.
A new state law gives cities the power to raise the tax from 7 to 8%, generating $200,000 a year.
"Once we use the amount that's allocated, based on the law, for the chamber and the CVB to use, then we need to be looking at helping the other entities in our city that need funds and would not normally get funds, but are also encouraging people to come to our city," said Dorothy Hubbard, Mayor of Albany.
Some think part of the money should go towards the Civic Center, others say it should be divided between the Civil Rights Institute, Riverquarium and Thronateeska.
Commissioners will vote on where the money should go at their meeting on Tuesday night.
