ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Dougherty County Commissioners are taking action to protect land along the Flint River.
Commissioners are looking at purchasing 32.272 acres of land through the Greenspace program.
They plan to use more than $59,000 from SPLOST revenue to buy the land.
Monday, the commission heard from the Citizens Greenspace Advisory Committee about how the purchase would help protect the river and prevent flood damage.
"And that's what we're trying to do is to protect the river for environmental reasons, for the future for our kids and our grandkids. This is a very good program, it's done really well for us so far," said Jack Stone, Dougherty County commissioner.
The county has bought land through this program over the past 20 years.
