High speed chase suspect faces a slew of charges

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

A teenaged driver faces a long list of charges after a dangerous high speed chase in a stolen car.

Troopers say 18-year old Rebecca Robertson failed to stop at a red light just east of Tifton last night, then led a trooper on a chase all the way through town.

It ended with a crash near Spring Hill Country Club that sent the trooper and suspect to the hospital.

After 18 year old Rebecca Robertson showed no regard for traffic lights or public safety, the trooper used a pit maneuver to stop her, leading to both vehicles crashing in a ditch.

Trooper Peter Lukas was chasing a suspect in a stolen vehicle when the cars crashed on Highway 82. 18 year old Rebecca Robertson was on the east side of Tifton when she rolled through a traffic light.

The wheels on the stolen Ford pick up truck she was driving squeaked as the truck came to a stop in the middle of the intersection at Goff Street and Highway 82, catching a Georgia State Trooper's attention.

"The trooper saw her vehicle run a red light, and he attempted to stop the vehicle for that violation, she began to flee," says Sgt. 1st Class Stan Stalnaker, Georgia State Patrol.

Robertson weaved in and out of traffic and sped through 12 traffic lights and a railroad crossing.

"She showed total disregard for red lights and public safety, the trooper pursued her through Tifton," says Stalnaker.

Once they were on the other side of town, Trooper Lukas knew he had to stop her before harming other drivers.

"On highway 82 west of Tifton, he attempted to end the pursuit by using the pit maneuver, and the two vehicles became entangled," says Stalnaker.

Lukas used the front of his patrol car to run Robertson off the road. Both vehicles crashed into a ditch and hit a road sign and some trees.

"The trooper and the violator were both transported to Tift Regional Medical Center by Tift County EMS, the trooper was treated and released, late last night," says Stalnaker.

The end to what could have been a deadly night.

Robertson is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, felony fleeing, attempting to elude, and multiple traffic violations.

Robertson remains in the hospital for observation. The stolen vehicle she was driving was her grandfathers.
