VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A major road construction project that will connect two sides of Valdosta is underway.

The Gornto Road Extension will connect Woodrow Wilson Drive to Gornto Road. Work just started near North Patterson and Oak Street.

The nearly $2 million project will be paid for with SPLOST revenue.

"It's needed very badly, we have adjacent roads that have overflow, basically a lot of volume of traffic going through it and by having this extension it will relieve that overflow," said City of Valdosta Engineering Project Manager, Jim Martinez.

The road will reduce traffic on Jerry Jones Drive and will provide better access to the Valdosta Mall area.

The road is expected to be completed in a year.
