New programs coming to Wiregrass

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Wiregrass Technical College is bringing four new programs to the school next year to prepare more students for jobs. One program has been created out of the need of skilled commercial construction managers in Georgia.

Wiregrass is a school that answers the call for industries that need skilled workers. The school is accepting more than 100 students for four new programs in fields that demand special training. One industry that will need more than 16,000 workers state-wide over the next few years is commercial construction management.

"All of the local industries in the area all came to the table and said, 'yes we definitely need to hire these kind of people, we definitely need this kind of program,'" said Dean of Technology and Industrial Programs, Roy Warren.

The Construction Management Associate's Degree will train students to become project managers, and general contractors. One incoming student says he's ready to take his training to the next level.

"There's a lot of people needing this job, but they're not hiring unless you have a degree," said Vernon Roberts.

Other programs include, a Crime Scene Investigation Associates Degree, Air Conditioning Technology, and Land Surveying Technicians.

Wiregrass has already spent $30,000 on brand new equipment for the Land Surveying Program, which will accept 20 new students next year.

"We're always excited about providing jobs, that's what we're for, that's our whole purpose as a technical college is for workforce development," said Warren.

Roberts says at 32-years-old he's excited to take his first college course.

"There's a lot of jobs in construction that people are not inquiring right now so I'm excited about the prospect of getting into this field," said Roberts.

Wiregrass is also working to start a Mechanical and Industrial Engineering program next Fall.
