(RNN) - Two years after the first body was found in the Long Island serial killer case, there is still no sign of a suspect or if there are more victims to be found.
In December 2010, police discovered bodies in the brush off Gilgo State Beach on Long Island, NY while looking for missing New Jersey prostitute Shannan Gilbert who disappeared in May.
Investigators first found four bodies, all who were sex workers that advertised their services on Craigslist.
Eventually 11 bodies were found in the area - nine women, one toddler and one Asian man - only half of whom have been identified and no arrests have been made.
On Dec. 13, 2011, the one-year anniversary of when the first remains were found, Suffolk County police said they had discovered the "skeletal remains" of Gilbert.
"It is clear that the area in and around Gilgo Beach has been used to discard human remains for some period of time," said District Attorney Thomas Spota.
Investigators in the case have said that one or more serial killers could be involved in the slayings of these victims.
Spota said in a news release that all 11 deaths cannot be pinned on one individual.
"As distasteful and disturbing as that is, there is no evidence that all of these remains are the work of a single killer," he said.
When Superstorm Sandy washed out a five-mile stretch of Ocean Parkway in October, questions began surfacing whether or not more bodies would be uncovered, yet the storm did not unearth any more victims.
One of the former lead investigators told the Associated Press this proves the Suffolk County Police Department's thoroughness with their many searches.
"The storm has pretty much clarified the fact that it doesn't appear any more bodies will be found along Ocean Parkway," retired Homicide Squad Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky said. "Right now, we know the exact number of people that we're dealing with."
Two bodies that had been dismembered in similar ways were found in Manorville, NY about 30 miles apart. In 2000, a torso missing its head, right foot and hands was discovered, and in 2003 a torso missing its head, hands and forearm was found.
Through DNA analysis, the body found in 2003 belonged to Jessica Taylor, 20. The other body has yet to be identified.
Spota said the manner of disposal of the unidentified body is similar to Taylor's, and distinctly dissimilar to the other bodies found on the barrier island.
The remains of three more women, an Asian man and a female toddler were found in March and April 2011.
The infant, between 16 and 32 months old, was found wrapped in a blanket and is believed to be the child of one of the unidentified women.
Six of the bodies have been identified: Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarsborough, ME; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, of Norwich, CT; Melissa Barthelemy, 24, of Erie County, NY; Amber Lynn Costello, 27, of North Babylon, NY, Jessica Taylor, 20, of Manhattan, NY and Shannan Gilbert, 24, of Jersey City, NJ.
Investigators are still working to identify three of the women, the man and the child.
However, Police remain tight-lipped about any new developments in the cold case.
"We are not commenting further at this time on the Gilgo investigation until/unless we have some additional information pertaining to the investigation that serves the investigation or the public by its release," the department said in a news release.
There are arguably lots of reasons why Suffolk County investigators have had a difficult time tracking down the so-called Long Island serial killer(s) including the condition and age of the bodies, the lack of surveillance in the area and the difficulty of getting sex workers and their johns to work with active investigations.
So far, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified by the Suffolk County Police Department, which is leading the investigation.
The FBI has yet to get involved in the case.
The victims are:
Last seen leaving a Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge after calling her 3-year-old daughter on June 5, 2010. Her remains were found more than 20 miles away from the hotel on Ocean Parkway. She was found near Gilgo Beach within a mile of three other victims; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy and Amber Lynn Costello.
The mother of two was last seen in Manhattan on July 9, 2007. There are few details about the day she disappeared.
Was last seen in the Bronx on July 12, 2009. Her sister said seven calls were made to her cellphone from Melissa's phone by an unknown man who said he killed her. Melissa's body was the first to be found during the search for Gilbert.
Was last seen on September 2, 2010 in North Babylon. She was last seen leaving her home meet an alleged client.
Was reported missing in July of 2003. Her naked torso was found on a plastic sheet in 2003, with her head and hands cut off in Manorville. Jessica's body was identified through DNA. Her case went cold until 2011, when her skull, hands and forearm were found on Ocean Parkway just east of where the bodies of Megan, Maureen, Melissa and Amber were found.
Made a 23-minute long frantic 911 call in May 2010 that has yet to be released to the public. She was last seen fleeing from a home in Oak Beach after making the call. Police said she likely drowned trying to get to the road.
Her scarred legs were found by walkers on Fire Island in 1996. In 2011, her skull was found west of Tobay Beach on Ocean Parkway. Her torso and hands remain missing.
She was found nude, in pieces, and wrapped in plastic bags in 2000 by hikers in Manorville. Her head, hands and leg were found in 2011 on Ocean Parkway in plastic bags, about 1.5 miles east of Jessica Taylor.
She was found wrapped in a blanket in the brush of Ocean Parkway in Suffolk County in April 2011. After DNA analysis is believed to be the child of another Jane Doe 3, whose remains were found down the road in Nassau County.
Through DNA analysis is believed to be the mother of the infant found. Little information has been released on this woman found on Ocean Parkway in April 2011. The body of her baby daughter was found about 10 miles east of hers.
He is believed to have been between 17 and 23 years of age, Asian, approximately 5'6". The man was also found in April 2011 wearing women's clothing and had been dead for at least five years, possibly 10 years. He was found a quarter mile away from the area Megan, Maureen, Amber and Melissa were found.
