ATLANTA, GA -

Qualifying began Monday for the Georgia State Senate District 11 seat left vacant following the resignation of long time south Georgia Senator John Bulloch.

So far three candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for the January 8th Special Election. Dr. Dean Burke, Brad Hughes, and Mike Keown.

Burke, a native southwest Georgian, is currently serving his second term as a member of the Bainbridge City Council. He graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1981, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Burke has maintained his practice in Bainbridge since 1985.

In 2006, Hughes was the Republican nominee for Congress in the 2nd District. He served as an assistant to State Representatives Kevin Cooke and Delvis Dutton and is immediate past Chairman of the 2nd Congressional District Republican Party. Most recently, he served in the Office of Secretary of State Brian Kemp.

Keown served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2005 to 2010. He previously served as mayor of Coolidge. Keown ran for Congress in Georgia's 2nd District in 2010. His campaign was the closest anyone has ever come to unseating the 20-year incumbent Democrat, Sanford Bishop.

Qualifying continues through Wednesday in Atlanta.
