Authorities discover suspicious backpack

Albany Police say an officer patrolling the area of the 1000 block of West Oglethorpe Boulevard around 10:30 Sunday night spotted a suspicious person walking in the area.

Officials say when the officer approached him he took off running, but dropped a backpack he was carrying. After being dropped, the contents of the bag began smoking.

AFD and ADDU were both notified to assist. Officers are searching for the suspect in the area.

Citizens should take precautions and avoid the area until more is determined about the content of the backpack.

Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
