Albany residents learned some important tips Saturday on how to protect themselves against identity thieves.
Every 35 seconds someone's identity is stolen in the United States.
Identity Theft is a crime that threatens all Americans and it was the topic of a town hall meeting Saturday morning.
Chief John Proctor and other investigators educated Albany residents on how to minimize the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft.
"Identity theft and credit card theft can occur without you knowing it, if I steal your car, you would know your car is missing, but if your identity is gone, it will take some time for you to realize that it has actually been taken," said Det. Catoa Baldwin, Albany Police Dept.
In 2011, 11.6M people were victims of identity theft, an increase of nearly one and a half million over 2010.
Those victims lost more than $18B in those crimes.
