Sumter Co. commissioners to finish year without Hurley

Posted: Updated:
SUMTER COUNTY, GA -

Sumter County Commissioners voted at a special called meeting Thursday night to finish the year without filling the seat of Commissioner Al Hurley, who was found guilty of attempted extortion and bribery in federal court this week.

Hurley sent the commissioners a resignation letter at that meeting even though the Governor's office says Georgia code automatically removed him from office upon his conviction.

Because there are only two more scheduled meetings this year, the commissioners voted to leave Hurley's District One seat vacant.

Caly Jones won that seat in the November election, and will take office in January.
