ATLANTA, GA (WALB) -

Long time south Georgia state Senator John Bulloch is resigning from office.

The Chairman of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs committee is stepping down due to health concerns.

Bulloch was hospitalized in October for meningitis. In a letter to Governor Nathan Deal, the Ochlocknee republican cited the illness as causing a severe setback in his physical capabilities.

The Georgia Secretary of State's Office announced today that a special election will be held to fill his seat in District 11.

Qualifying gets underway Monday and the special election will be held Tuesday January 8th.

Bulloch is the second GOP Senator to step down this week. North Georgia Senator Chip Rogers resigned abruptly Monday prompting a special election in his district.

Geographically, his district makes a circle from Blakely to Bainbridge to Moultrie.
