ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Police are searching for a gunman tonight who beat and robbed a man walking to his home near Beachview Drive.

The victim was struck several times in the head with a gun but luckily got away with his life.

Police say the suspect shot at Phillips before robbing him and running away.

I spoke with a neighbor who says he heard the gun shot. He looked out of the window and saw a man he knew lying on the ground.

What neighbors call a quiet neighborhood turned violent Thursday morning when a gunman attacked a man walking home.

"Just aggravated, especially for it to be so close and then somebody, an elderly in our community, someone who just came home, fighting cancer, minding his own business, to be hassled by somebody," said Shaun Griffin, Neighbor.

Neighbors say 55-year-old Richard Phillips was on the way home from getting groceries when a man with a gun tried to rob him.

"He is in the process of dealing with cancer, that just makes it more frustrating, for him to be hassled, they say he jumped on him, and he is out here fighting for his life," said Griffin.

The suspect forced Phillips to the ground and demanded money.

"I heard the gunshot, and I noticed that it sounded like it was too close, so I didn't really pay it any attention, but when I got up and looked out of the window, I seen the ambulance the police in my backyard," said Griffin.

The suspect hit Phillips in the head several times with the gun and then fired a shot in his direction.

"He wasn't shot, the bullet hit the ground but he shot at him," said Griffin.

Neighbors saw Phillips lying on the floor and called police.

"When she went to the window, she saw him lying in the backyard and she was the one who called police and the ambulance and they came out," said Griffin.

The suspect got away with Phillips wallet and fled the scene.

The suspect is described as being a black man with light complexion about 5'7'' or 5'8'' in height and wearing all black.

The case remains under investigation.

If you have any information on who the suspect in this case might be, call Albany Police Department.
