ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

It's cold and flu season but it's also that time of year when pediatricians see more cases of a respiratory virus called RSV.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV is a contagious viral disease that may infect a person's lungs and breathing.

Almost everyone gets RSV by the time they are two years old most people recover in a week or two, but babies and older adults are more at risk for serious illnesses, such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

Symptoms can be fever, runny nose, cough, wheezing, sore throat or headache.

"If you are ill stay home and washing your hands and make sure you wash surfaces you think may be contaminated as well," said Jacqueline Jenkins, Epidemiologist.

There is no vaccine to prevent RSV.

It typically goes up in the fall then peaks in the winter. But, the exact timing of RSV season varies by location.
