Trees for Troops at work in 10 Country

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Trees for Troops will deliver approximately 18,000 trees at 62 Bases in 2012, and some of them came through South Georgia Tuesday.

100 trees passed through the National Guard Armory in Thomasville. Some will go to families in the Thomas County area, and the others will go to other locations, some overseas.

Trees for Troops serves U.S. troops stationed in far-off lands over the holidays, and delivers American-grown Christmas trees even to the other side of the world, just in time for Christmas.

The 2012 program kicked off in a big way November 20 at Dull's Tree Farm in Thorntown, Indiana. The event was filled with excitement as more than 50 volunteers -- including FedEx employees, Future Farmers of America and the National Guard -- helped organize, box and load 300 trees to be shipped overseas.

Trees were donated by members of the Indiana Christmas Tree Association, and shipping was donated by FedEx. The lucky recipients are two U.S. bases in Kuwait (Camp LSA and Camp Virginia) and troops stationed at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.

Trees for Troops, a program of the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, provides farm-grown Christmas Trees to armed forces members and their families in the U.S. and stationed overseas.

Since 2005, Trees for Troops has provided 103,186 Christmas Trees to military families and troops in the United States and overseas. Each year, thousands of Christmas Tees are donated by American farm families and the public, and FedEx delivers these trees to more than 60 military bases.
