25 million coat hangers kept out of landfills

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Most dry cleaners will tell you clothes hangers can be hard to come by, that's why the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute is saying thanks to Dry cleaning businesses for saving some 25 million hangers from landfills.

Cleaners around the country and even here in Southwest Georgia pledged to properly recycle unwanted hangers.

One worker at Compass Cleaners say some customers bring in hangers by the hundreds and although some of them may not be reusable, it  makes a big difference in keeping the planet green.

"I would say a weekly average is about 400 hangers. We go through sort and the ones that we can't use, unfortunately we do have to put in the dumpster because there is no protocol for recycling hangers."

Drycleaning & Laundry Institute officials say their goal in 2013 will be to keep 30 million hangers out of landfills.
