ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dozens of people showed up to a South Albany church, Monday afternoon, to receive 4,500 pounds of bread donated by the Second Harvest of South Georgia.

Now second Harvest officials say they need more organizations to step up and help fight hunger.

"This is a great thing because it's really people living in poverty, so it's a great help to the community," said bread recipient Marva Hall.

Hall was one of the many who showed up New Macedonia Baptist Church on Zackery Avenue to take home 4,500 pounds of bread donated by the Second Harvest of South Georgia.

"This time of year it's especially needed, but they've (New Macedonia Baptist Church) been doing this way before the holidays and this is what we're seeking. This is what we're looking for. We want people to get involved, tell us what the need is and if they want to participate," said Jim Case with Second Harvest.

Church officials say they've been giving out food to the public for the past couple of months and those coming to get it are truly appreciative.

"They have a positive attitude and they are grateful for the stuff that we give them. Bread, fruit or vegetables or whatever we give them, they seem to be very grateful for it and we appreciate that," said up New Macedonia Baptist Church Deaconess Donna McMiller.

With Second Harvest officials say donations are 20% lower than last year, they will take all the help they can get, especially with so many who may need a helping hand.

"When they're not eating they're bad and stealing, so this kind of helps out in every little way," said Hall.

"It makes me feel good to know that they appreciate the things we give them and they're very grateful for it," said McMiller.

Bread was also delivered to folks at the Malone Towers and others that are sick and shut in.
