ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Sumter County Commissioner Al Hurley took the witness stand Monday to testify in his bribery and extortion trial.

Prosecutors say Hurley tried to extort $15,000  from Michigan contractor Terrance Parker one year ago in exchange for Sumter County work contracts.

At the Albany Federal Courthouse, Hurley under cross examination admitted in calls and text messages to Parker he made up a story about having two partners, and apologized, saying "he was not proud of that."

Closing arguments and charging the jury were underway late  Monday afternoon, and jury deliberations should begin Tuesday.
