Coffee Co. K-9 assists in catching high speed chase suspect

COFFEE CO., GA (WALB) -

We have amazing dash cam video of a high speed chase in Coffee County.

The driver took off when a deputy tried to stop him. The dangerous chase went through two counties at speeds of 100 miles per hour.

The man had a gun, but the officer's K-9 saved the day and took down the suspect.

You're looking at police dash cam video taken from Corporal Chris Rozar's cruiser.

Thursday, Rozar and his K-9 partner Deuce got into a high speed chase when they attempted to stop Russell Jay Newell, who was driving with a suspended license.

"I've dealt with him in the past, I knew he had a suspended license and I knew he was banned out of Coffee County," said, Corporal Chris Rozar's, Coffee County Sheriff's Office.

Newell pulled over, but when Rozar opened his car door he and his passenger Kimbra Jackson Griffin, sped off and led Rozar and Deuce on a dangerous high speed journey down narrow two lane roads.

Newell's vehicle gave out in Irwin County on Ray Road. Newell jumped out of the car while it was still moving and leaves Griffin behind.

He ran into the woods, and Deuce followed closely behind.

"We got into the wooded area, and he withdrew the weapon and he did point it at my dog," said Rozar.

Which made a dangerous experience, even worse.

"When he drew on my dog, I went to approach him real quick but like I said I thought he was going to take my dog, kill my dog," said Rozar.

But Deuce didn't let that happen.

"When he drew the gun on my dog, the dog grabbed him by that arm," said Rozar.

Deuce, a two year old Belgium Malinois is trained in narcotics and apprehension. He took the suspect down and held him down until other officers arrived.

"The gun was found two or three feet from the offender," said Rozar.

Thankfully, a dangerous experience that ended safely.

"He's my partner, have you ever had someone do that before? No mam," said Rozar.

For Rozar, it demonstrated Deuce's dedication.

"I know he's got my back, he's there for me," said Rozar.

Now, Rozar knows he and his K-9 partner are prepared to handle whatever is thrown their way.

"Now I got confidence in him and myself now I know he'll be there for me and he'll do what he's trained to do," said Rozar.

Irwin County and the Georgia State patrol assisted and helped capture Griffin shortly after. Both face multiple charges

Deputies recovered Methamphetamine packaged for sale and more than $1,000 cash from Newell who was on probation for drug convictions.

Dogs from Ware State Prison found the gun in the woods. It was not loaded.
