ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
A health department program that stresses the importance of prenatal care is celebrating success.
Current and former participants in the Centering Pregnancy program gathered with their children at the Dougherty County Health Department Thursday afternoon to celebrate the program's third anniversary.
The program educates expecting parents about the importance of prenatal care and teaches them valuable information through the pregnancy process.
Health officials say it's important that this program continue to grow and thrive.
"We're trying to decrease premature labor, we're trying to decrease low birthrate. We want healthy, big babies and we also want to increase breast feeding rates. So far we have accomplished that with this program," said Karen Baker, Dougherty Co. Health Department Family Nurse Practitioner.
Recently the program received an $80, 000 grant from the Healthcare Georgia Foundation.
It's one of only two programs in the state approved by the Centering Healthcare Institute.
