ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Since March of this year, WG&L has had to prosecute more than 30 cases of people stealing their services.

Board members voted to do something about that Thursday. They agreed to increase the minimum fee of people tampering with the meters.

Anyone caught tampering with the electric or gas meter will be charged a minimum fee of $200. The fee for tampering with the water meter is now $50.

It's been years since the commission has changed their Unauthorized Turn On Fee. Investigator David Adkins says when people steal services it affects everyone.

"Anytime you're using or messing with that light meter , there's always a chance something can go wrong," said Atkins.

This fee is in addition to any fines imposed by the courts.
