ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Officials at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital are urging Georgia lawmakers to renew a hospital tax that's set to expire.

Hospitals pay a fee based on the number of beds they have.

The revenue supports the state's Medicaid program.

Hospitals that serve more Medicaid patients get a larger portion of that revenue.

About 70% of Phoebe's patients are on Medicaid or Medicare.

Hospitals that don't serve as many of those patients don't want to pay the tax, but Phoebe officials say all hospitals should chip in.

"Yes we do think that hospitals, generally speaking around the state should share in this burden. If there is going to be a bed tax, everybody ought to participate in it," said Phoebe Putney VP Tommy Chambless.

Chambless says if the tax is not renewed, Phoebe will lose more than one million dollars.

The General Assembly will take up the issue during its session which opens in January.
