ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Attorneys are selecting a jury, and are hopeful that opening statements could be made before the day ends in the federal trial of Americus business man and Sumter County Commissioner Al Hurley.

Hurley was indicted on Extortion, Bribery, and making false statements charges.

Federal prosecutors say on two occasions late last year, Hurley solicited payments totaling $20,000 from a contractor in Michigan to help him get asbestos abatement work with Sumter County.

Hurley has been on the commission for 12 years, and has owned a clothing store for 28 years.

Hurley was released on his own recognizance following his arraignment.

Jury selection begins Tuesday morning at the Albany Federal Courthouse.
