Albany and Dougherty County leaders are moving ahead with a plan to implement an energy excise tax on manufacturers to help balance their budgets.
Dougherty County commissioners voted on the move this morning.
Manufacturers in Georgia got a break when lawmakers decided to phase out the state sales tax on energy use over four years to save industries millions of dollars and make Georgia more attractive to large industries.
But now counties and cities across the state are trying to decide whether to implement a 2% excise tax on energy use by manufacturers to make up for lost revenue.
Last month Albany and Dougherty County commissioners met to discuss the process.
