CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

A Cordele man remains in critical condition three days after he was severely burned in a house fire.

Firefighters say 33-year-old Tyrone Newsome received burns to nearly 50 percent of his body early Tuesday morning.

He and his wife and kids had escaped the fire but Newsome went back inside to put out the blaze himself when was overcome by flames.

Fire officials say while homeowners want to protect their home it's not worth risking your life.

Firefighters say in additional to burns outside your body you can get burns inside too.

Without breathing protection  they can get burns to their airway or stuff like that or stuff like that its best just to get out and stay out and let us handle it when we get there," said Capt. Tim Cooper, Tifton Fire Department.

Newsome was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center where he remains. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
