Americus community feeds the hungry

Open Hands Ministry held their annual Community Thanksgiving Meal for the less fortunate and shut-ins at Lenny's Market in Americus.

At the farmers market in Americus, a meal was shared with the spirit of giving thanks.

Turkey, stuffing, and greens were among the Thanksgiving staples served at the Community Thanksgiving Meal.

Annie Belle Moss has been helping with the Thanksgiving community dinner since the creation of the Open Hands Ministry in 1984.

"This seems to be the biggest one, and people seem to be the most excited, because the need is greater, and everyone wants to contribute something for thanksgiving," said Annie Belle Moss, Organizer.

About 300 meals were handed out to those who might not otherwise get a good Thanksgiving dinner.

"There are probably a lot of folks that will be here today and this will be their only hot meal for a month," said Jewell Woodard, Volunteer.

The ministry was created to feed others not only during the holidays, but also on other days throughout the year.

"My husband died, my sisters all died, and I said now I am alone, but I can help do this, and it makes me feel good and needed," said Woodard.

And they didn't only be hand out food. Free haircuts were given to anyone who needed one.

"A lot of people don't have family but if you get out and show some kindness and love, that is what its all about," said Marilynn Hicks, Volunteer.

All in the name of spreading joy during the holiday season.

At Thursday's meal they served over 12 turkeys plus all the fixings.  A similar event is also held on Christmas.
