ATLANTA, GA (WALB) -

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that Southwest Georgia's preliminary unemployment rate declined to 8.9 percent in October.

That is one-tenth of a percentage point from the 9 percent in September and in October 2011 the rate was 9.7 percent.

Georgia's October seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 8.7 percent, which was down three-tenths of a percentage point from the September rate of 9 percent. The October 2011 jobless rate was 9.7 percent.

Over the year, Georgia gained 68,000 jobs, or 1.7 percent, from 3,903,700 in October 2011.
