Firefighters urge caution while cooking on Thanksgiving
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Many of you will be up early in the morning cooking Thanksgiving dinner and firefighters want you to be careful.
They want you to make sure you keep a close eye on everything you cook and use extreme caution if you plan to fry a turkey.
The National Fire Protection Association says deep fryer fires are responsible for about 5 deaths, 60 injuries, 900 destroyed homes each year.
Firefighters say you have to thaw your turkey completely.
"The biggest thing is to make sure you have the right amount of oil, that you don't have any ice on the turkey and make sure you're in a well open and ventilated space. Always make sure to do it outside," said Battalion Chief Kelly Harcrow.
You should also have a fire extinguisher nearby and use a long instrument to put the turkey in the deep fryer so you're not standing directly over it.
