VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -
Drivers get ready. A detour that will be in place for two years starts next week on a busy road in Valdosta.
Construction started today on the $9 million West Hill Avenue overpass.
Officials say they know the detour will cause some frustration, but the project will eventually help traffic near downtown run a lot smoother.
They say the overpass is needed because of long wait times drivers experience when trains pass through town.
"It's going to be a lot easier for everyone to get though Valdosta and get around town to do their business. To have businesses being here they don't have to be delayed by these trains anymore," said Corey Hull, Transportation Planner, Southern Georgia Regional Commission.
Starting Tuesday, the detour will begin in downtown Valdosta and take drivers down Gil Harbin Boulevard and back up St. Augustine Road.
It's expected to add an extra five minutes to your drive.
