P. O. meeting disappoints Albany leaders

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany leaders say they're more unsure about the future of the downtown post office now than they were before a meeting they hoped would answer their questions.

The regional Postmaster from Jacksonville didn't show up at Tuesday's meeting. Local leaders and post office customers voiced their concerns to the Albany postmaster.

City Commissioner Christopher Pike said it appears the postal service isn't interested in contracting the facility out to a private business.

And if they did they may change the Zip Code, which would still require everyone who has a P.O. box there to change their letterhead and business cards.

"The local postmaster really didn't have anymore information than we had so he was just basically writing our concerns and said that he would forward them on," said Pike.

The downtown branch is set to close in June.

Pike says the Postal Service hasn't given local leaders any indication when they may find out if that could change or whether a private company could take over the facility.
