Whooping Cranes flock through SW GA

DECATUR COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

After a stopover in south Georgia, endangered whooping cranes are nearing their winter home in Florida Wednesday.

At around seven this morning folks in Decatur County snapped photos of Operation Migration ultralights guiding a flock of cranes south.

Mona Musgrove says she's been following the crane's journey through our website and was excited to see them in person.

"I didn't know in my lifetime when I'd ever be able to see them again and so I thought I'd come out. I intend to support the cause by sending them a donation and hopefully I'll be able to see them again next year as they come through this area."

There are only about 600 whooping cranes left in the wild.

This flock will briefly rest in Jefferson County before the final leg of the journey to St. Marks, Florida.
