ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A payroll mistake at Albany Water Gas and Light created a debit to employees bank accounts this morning.

About half of WG&L's 300 employees use direct deposit.

The utility confirms that when a fill-in worker handled payroll yesterday, paychecks were accidentally debited to employee's accounts rather than credited to them.

Those payroll amounts showed up as debits in the employees' accounts this morning.

Finance Director John VanZant said the problem is being corrected and the money should be re-deposited to employees' accounts by tomorrow morning.

This is the second time this has happened.

VanZant says the way the system is set-up, it's too easy to make this kind of mistake.

He says he will work with the bank to find a long-term solution to avoiding this in the future.
