City occupational tax won't climb

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A vote to increase the minimum business tax was denied by Albany City Commissioners. The amendment proposed Tuesday morning would increase the minimum occupational tax by $50.

If that tax increase is passed, it would create $150,000 for the city's general fund.

The last time a change was made to the business tax was in 2007. Back then commissioners voted to take it from $150 down to $100.

Commissioners heard from the finance staff on why the increase was needed

"We understand that everybody has expenses that are going up. What we hope is that everybody understands that the city's expenses have also gone up. It takes people, paper and postage," said Finance Director Kris Newton.

Commissioners will vote again on this issue November 27th at 6:30 pm.
