ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
A young bald eagle, injured in south Georgia, is being cared for now at Auburn University. Representatives from the Georgia Wildlife Rescue Association took the eagle to the Southeastern Raptor Center Monday afternoon.
The expert veterinarians at Auburn believe the raptor is 3 or 4 years-old. He suffered a broken wing and leg when he was hit by a car in Colquitt County, but the vets believe they can nurse him back to health and release him.
It's nesting and mating season for eagles right now so they are more active. Their numbers are also increasing in our area, so you're more likely to see them. GWRA Executive Director Chet Powell said, "eagles have made a tremendous comeback. In Colquitt County where this one came from, we know of five nests in Colquitt County right now, and I don't know when that's happened; probably, I would say, the forties or fifties."
There isn't a documented nest near Norman Park where this eagle was hurt, so volunteers may do a search to see if there's another nest in the area.
