ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
An East Albany veterinarian says the city's lack of a feral cat policy is an issue that needs more debate. He is now caring for four cats that were trapped last week.
These are three of the nearly dozen feral cats trapped last week by City Animal Control and Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials at Cleve Cox landing. Albany Humane Society officials asked Dr. Fred Freeland to take 7 cats, because they were already overwhelmed. He still has three in the traps, and says it's not fair to the cats to trap them with no city policy what to do with them.
"I think there is a balance between what are commonly called community cats and the environment," said Dr. Freeland. " There just needs to be more understanding at all levels."
Dr. Freeland has spayed or neutered the three feral cats and one tame cat that were trapped. He has them up for adoption at Albany Pet Partners. The city appointed a citizens committee two years ago to come up with a feral cat policy, but never adopted their recommendations.
