AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -
Americus and Sumter County may end up in court over how to divide local sales tax money. City Attorney Jimmy Skipper will file a lawsuit by Wednesday if no agreement with the county is reached before then.
The split had been 51 percent for Sumter County and 49 percent to the cities. Now the County wants 57 percent.
If an agreement is not reached by December 31st, the sales tax money goes away, which some Sumter County residents aren't happy about.
"I think they need to put their differences aside on an important issues like this, taxpayers work hard on every level, and they pay taxes, so if they come to an agreement, they would help the community and the money would not be lost," says Gabriel Hicks, Sumter Co. Resident.
A new law requires that the government renegotiate the agreement after a census.
