ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County's interim police chief will get up to six months to show how well she can do the job before county commissioners will decide whether to launch a search to fill the job.

County commissioners voted Monday to give interim Chief Jackie Battles the time show the public what she can do and prove she can handle problems she may run into.

Commissioner John Hayes says he wants to make sure commissioners are not setting her up for failure by not assigning an assistant chief to help.

"We have to remain very cautious of our spending but at the same time can we put a price on public safety and good officers who provide that I don't think we can," said Commissioner John Hayes.

There have been no final decisions on the assistant chief position.

Eliminating the spot would save the county money, but if Battles expresses the need for one as she gets into her new role, commissioners would go down that path.
