ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Georgia's top highway safety officials are canvassing the sate to discuss projected increase in 2012 traffic deaths.

Col. Mark McDonough, Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, and Harris Blackwood, Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety are touring the state to bring attention to safe driving.

They arrived at the Albany Airport Tuesday morning at 10:15, having spoken in Columbus, where the tour started.

Col. McDonough and Director Blackwood will address 2012 traffic fatalities, which are projected to increase for the first time in six years.

In a media tour scheduled just ahead of the year's busiest traffic periods, the state's top highway safety officials will launch a 41-day awareness campaign, Operation: Safe Holidays. 

The program is aimed at reducing the crash rate through the end of the year

Times and locations of the tour are as follows:

  • 9:00 am: Flightways Columbus at the Columbus airport
  • 10:15 am: Albany airport, airport lounge
  • 11:30 am: Macon airport commercial terminal conference room
  • 1:15 pm: Savannah-Hilton Head International airport
  • 2:30 pm: Augusta Regional airport, general aviation building
