TU unveils new West Campus

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

With high school football season coming to a close, sports fans in Thomasville are wondering what's next.

Beginning in the Fall of 2013 Thomas University will have their inaugural men's and women's basketball seasons.

"As a spectator sport for people in the community to have access to, that's something we really haven't had and TU has brought it here and is bringing it here," said Thomasville Mayor Max Beverly.

The mayor, sheriff, county commissioners, and other community members toured TU's new West Campus Friday morning.

"We've actually worked for around five years to acquire this property, do a design of its use, and now put it into use. 34 acres. I have staff here every day now," said TU President Dr. Gary Bonvillian.

"They've really taken a piece of property that was an eyesore of derelict buildings and transformed it. It has been a really great thing for Thomasville," said Beverly.

Bonvillian says this expansion will have both immediate and long term impacts. "One of the first impacts is it's allowed us to grow our enrollment significantly. We've doubled our athletic program in the last two years and that means adding a lot more traditional aged students."

One of those traditional aged students is new basketball recruit Bria Joyner-Williams.

The Atlanta native says she never considered Thomas University until she got the call from Head Coach Coretta Brown.

"By getting an education while doing something I really love is pretty awesome."

Beverly says TU is critical to the economic future and sustainability of Thomasville. "All these young folks coming from all over the country and all over the world into Thomasville as well as a lot of our local population being educated here."

The West Campus is also home to a new Student Life Center which houses a fitness center, training room, and offices for the athletic and student life staff.

Over the next few years, Thomas University plans to move all of their athletic fields and student housing to the West Campus.

Grady County deputies are cracking down on illegal dumping. If you have big items that you need to get rid of such as a couch or a mattress, you need to be careful where you dump it, because you could face fines up to $700 dollars. "That's exactly right, it's an ugly site," said Sheriff Harry Young. Young he's had enough of the illegal dumping going on in Grady County. Encouraging his deputies to now hand out tickets instead of warnings.
