ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Two Dougherty County men are accused of nearly starving their 81-year-old mother to death.

Sheriff's investigators say 59-year old Vernon West and 55-year old Roderick West only called an ambulance because they thought their mother was dead.

They're charged with elder abuse.

Paramedics found 81-year old Verma Walker a former Dougherty County teacher in a filthy room at her home on Betty's Drive where the lights had even been taken out.

Walker was covered with bedsores infested with ants and maggots.

Investigators don't think she'd been fed for a month.

"Frankly she was on the point of starvation and appeared almost cadaverous. Extremely malnourished, to the point where they didn't think she would probably make it through the weekend," said Captain Craig Dodd, Dougherty Co. Sheriff's Office.

Investigators are still looking into Walker's condition before her son's took control of her care and her finances.

Veteran law enforcement officers say this is the worst case of elder abuse they have ever seen.
