South GA vet donates turkeys to Salvation Army

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A South Georgia man who gave to his country by serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars is giving back to his community leading up to Thanksgiving.

He donated turkeys to the Salvation Army Thursday night.

It's an example leaders at the charity hope others will follow.

This time of year is known as the time of giving and this holds true for Richard Shiver, a Purple Heart Honoree.

He usually donates to the Salvation Army, but this year he did something different. He gave the charity six turkeys.

"I knew all the funds are low this year and I wanted to do something for them. I always donate to them, but this time I thought about the turkeys," said Shiver.

And the gift comes at a great time as food at the Salvation Army is running low. They feed more than 100 people each evening at the shelter and more than 70 people in the morning.

"It highlights the generosity of the Albany community and we can certainly use that. It comes at a fabulous time and it'll be put to good use," said Kelly English with the Salvation Army.

Shiver says he'll always give to the Salvation and he hopes others have kindness in their hearts to do the same.

"A lot of people will have a good thanksgiving, especially the ones that didn't have anything else otherwise," said Shiver.

And English says any donation, no matter the size, is always appreciated and goes to good use.

"This right here helps so we don't have to dig that much," said English.

As the holiday season cranks into full gear the two men can only hope more donations pour in.

English says the biggest item needed at the Salvation Army is canned food.

You can drop off donations at the Salvation Army on 2nd Avenue.
