ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Now that water and gas lines are out of the way, and precautions have been taken, the actual demolition of the nearly 100 year old Broad Avenue bridge is underway.

The first step was removing the utilities, which took a three million dollar chunk of the roughly $11 million project.

Crews started working on the water and gas lines the first week of September, and had almost 700 feet of solid rock to drill through.

Removing the water line took another three weeks.

Engineers can't just drop the bridge like they would in a normal demolition. They have to take it off piece by piece, and make sure nothing drops into the water.

The bridge has been closed since early 2009 when inspectors found the footings were severely deteriorated.

We will have more on the demolition of the old bridge this evening.
