Pay your fine with food

Posted: Updated:
CAMILLA, GA (WALB) -

Overdue library books are being transformed into food.

It's not a trick or a miracle. It's the Food for Fines program at Desoto Trail Regional Library branches.

Throughout November, library users can pay off their fines by donating non-perishable food. They welcome your donation even if you don't have an overdue book.

Library Director Lisa Rigsby is pleased with the amount of food they're collecting. She said, "Well, so far, we've got a box that I can't pick up. It's that heavy. It's going pretty good this year."

All the food will go to the Mitchell County Food Bank. Food Bank President Jim Lapham said, "It's important to us because we're constantly in need of food. We serve over 300 families a month."

One food item will pay off a $1 fine. The Desoto Trail system serves Mitchell, Baker, and Early Counties.
