Lady Cavs worry about layoff

The Darton women's soccer team leaves Saturday morning for the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.

The Lady Cavs have earned the eighth seed after capturing a second straight region title.

The Darton women were national runner-up last year but most that team has graduated. This will be the first trip for many on the Lady Cav roster.

The big concern for head coach Ken Veilands is the time off.

It has been two weeks since the Lady Cavs won that region title.

"Most important thing we can focus on is keeping in game mode. It is hard to going from two weeks of practice and going straight to games. Coach has been trying to keep competitive. Keep our fitness up. That is what we have been focusing on at the moment", said defender Stephanie Anes.

"You can't really emulate what your fitness level is going to be at a national tournament because the speed and everybody is so intense and adrenaline is flying. It is being able to balance these kids and get them fit and the speed of play and keeping that going", said head coach Ken Veilands.

Darton women open pool play against Muskegon on Tuesday morning and play #1 Brevard on Wednesday.

The Darton men play Monday night in their first game.
