THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -
Veterans Day falls on Sunday, but Friday is when some Thomasville groups are reaching out to those who have worn our country's uniforms.
Students from Barbara Lee's fifth grade classes at Brookwood Lower School raised their voices Friday morning at the American Legion in Thomasville, to kick off the Veterans Day program.
"It's extremely important that we don't let our veterans be forgotten. It also brings up to the public who sometimes does not remember what we did. When we're having a war, brings a lot of patriotism. When we're not having a war it kind of reigns a little bit," said Post 31 Commander Larry Price.
County Commissioners, veterans, and other community leaders were at the Salvation Army Church in Thomasville.
"And it's important that these people are celebrated because they are the ones that keep our freedom. It's the ability to go to any church we want, it's the ability to go across state lines, and to visit other countries. Some countries don't have those freedoms and we do and they fought for those freedoms," said Salvation Army Auxiliary Captain Stan Robinson.
The Thomasville Police Honor Guard also participated in a Veterans salute, with American flags.
There will also be a Nationwide 'agent orange' balloon release Saturday at 1:00PM at the American Legion post.
