ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, many people have stepped up to help those devastated by the storm. But there are plenty of people who suffer from hunger and other problems every day who wind up under the radar.

This week, a group of young actors from our area stepped up to make sure that they aren't forgotten.

It was the International Thespian Society, Troupe 5297.  You know about the musical talent in Lee County, but there's some talent among this budding group of actors and actresses as well.

Dotty Davis, the Theatre Director at Lee County high School said, "I do think I have several this year, next year who are going to really knock it out of the park."

Recently they showed that their talents extend beyond just getting up on a stage and performing. As part of a push from their national organization they decided to start a food drive.

Chelsey Shirley, a junior said, "the Saturday before Halloween, we went to several different neighborhoods and we had paper grocery bags and we put flyers on them and we told them what we were doing."

On Halloween, they picked up the bags and what they wound up with came as quite a surprise to everyone.

"We raised 3000 pounds of food," said Shirley.

Even to Davis, who was a veteran of food drives going back to her days working in radio.

She said, "I was shocked."

Tuesday the food that had been collected was taken to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Albany.  But they weren't the only ones to benefit from the donations.

Undoubtedly our young actors and actresses from Lee County are more comfortable in an auditorium than they would ever be collecting food for the hungry.

But doing things like that in the community can help them fulfill another role - the role of citizens.

Chelsey Shirley is only a junior, and she's hoping that the food drive isn't only a one time event.

"I hope that it's better than it was this year," she said.

Seeing this kind of poverty so close to where they live made quite an impression on them. And they are ready to help.

Shirley said, "I think it's important for everyone to give back."

If they can keep giving back in the years ahead, then they'll be award winners in their role as citizens.

Shirley says they used social media to spread the word, and they hope to collect even more food next year.

The young actors and actresses will lend a helping hand again at the Breakfast With Santa in December, where they'll help feed kids.
